Left Hand Doodles

Since injuring my right hand and not properly taking care of myself since moving I've been forcing myself to draw with my left hand. Resting my right has been nice, as I'm able to jump back and forth a little now.

Here are some scribbles from my left hand.

I started to practice drawing with both hands at the same time.

I've been studying old masters and one of the masters I've enjoyed is Augustus John's work. 

I struggle with that nice loose flow I have with my right hand, so shading and drawing things like hair are hard, so I cheat a little and just my right hand for some of those things.

Practicing contour drawing has been such a huge help for me to break away from my cliché habits for drawing certain things. And for the first time I feel like I'm "seeing". Again I need to start pushing more story elements into my work, but that will come in time.

Japantown SketchCrawl #10

I'm still getting use to "winter" here in San Francisco, and by winter I mean spring time. As much as I miss CO; I don't miss scraping ice off my windshield, or letting my car warmup for 30 mins, or having my nose hair freeze, or driving / playing bumper cars on an icy road with a bunch of idiots.

Out here, I try to take advantage of the nice weather. This weekend was the 10th sketchcrawl I've been organizing. It started with students from AnimC but now we have people from different schools, studios and professions. We had a really nice turn out today, 17 artists and growing. :D

And of course we ended the day with some delicious ramen. :)

For the first half of the morning the weather was nice enough to draw outside, then the wind picked up and we moved inside the Ferry building.

There was a lot of great talent out sketching on Saturday, it was very inspiring and motivating to meet new artists.

ASIFA Life Drawing

ASIFA Colorado hosted it's first gathering for a life drawing session and it was great! It's been a long while since I've attended a class, so needless to say I was rusty. I need to find a place I can go to weekly. We had a great model as well, it's always exciting when we have a model that actually models and doesn't come in to sleep for two hours.

I hope ASIFA can host more of these!

LA Ventures

What a blast the past few weeks have been! I flew out to the premiere of Kung Fu Panda 2! Had lunch with some friends at couple studios, went to the Zoo for some good'ol life drawing, played on the beach and ate great food!

The premiere was so much fun, the amount of energy in that room with everyone was incredible. All those years of hard work lead up to that moment to just fly by in a couple hours. I hope KFP2 does well at the box office! I hope to be apart of that experience in the future.

I then had to come back home on May 24th, recover and reconvene with my team to finish up the pitch we have been developing. And I flew back out to LA just 4 days later with a collegue from Big Grin.

Sometimes I enjoy drawing the animals not enclosed behind bars more than the ones that are. ;)

Life Drawing Jan 29th

Finally made it back to a class! Enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and drew a new model who was quite good at posing. I always enjoy models who take posing seriously - just helps.

Next time I'll get there in time for the fun gesture work!

It's been a while since attending a Dr. Sketchey's event and even longer since sitting down and practicing some life drawing.

I was extremely slow and rusty, the event this month was an ode to the pinup - so much fun and I wasn't fast enough! haha. next time.
